The earthquakes in Cuba are getting slightly better each year. However, there are about
2000 earthquakes in the area each year. This is because it is in a septentrional oriente fault
zone. The fault line goes around the island’s southeastern coast and is between the
north American plate and the Caribbean plate. The most active area is the Caribbean
which is responsible for most of the tremors that were felt on the island. The reason this
is happening is because the north America plate and the Caribbean plate separates
releasing magma that rises to the earth’s surface and solidifying to create an oceanic
crust. In situations like these, earthquakes are common.
What was the worst one?
In 1771, at midnight, an earthquake struck Sothern Cuba on the 12th of June. It lasted
about 7 minutes and the Morro Castle and La Socapa Fort were destroyed, also the
hospital as well as the Gosvener's house, killing more than 700 people.
How did this effect the people in Cuba?
In the past month, the country of Cuba has been through a couple of earthquakes
amongst them most happened just over a week ago. So how can a country recover
from such powerful earthquakes?
Although having been through many earthquakes, Cuba still struggles to repair the
buildings recked by the natural disasters that occur at the oriente fault zone. They
recover by making sure everyone's ok then people come in from different factories and
help to rebuild homes. This system has helped rebuild the city quickly before the next
earthquake.
Facts:
. earliest recorded earthquake in Cuba was in the 1500
